Each offers a different playstyle and flavor to explore.
In this event we will be playing the Two-Headed Giant variant of play.
Two-Headed Giant (2HG) is a team format where you and a partner play together against another team of two. Instead of playing as individuals, each team shares a single life total of 30, and you win or lose as a team.
Both players on a team take their turns at the same time. You draw, play lands, cast spells, and attack together, and you’re allowed to openly talk through your plays and plan things out with your teammate. Even though you’re working as a team, each player still has their own deck, hand, and battlefield.
During combat, you attack as a team, and the opposing team decides how to block with all of their creatures. Any damage that gets through is dealt to the team’s shared life total, not to individual players. Effects that say “each opponent” will apply to both players on the opposing team.
The goal is simple: reduce the other team’s life total to zero or win through any other normal game condition. It’s a fun, social format that’s perfect for pairs and great for more casual, interactive events.
Each team builds their decks together using a shared card pool. Instead of each player getting their own prerelease kit, the team receives a combined pool (typically 12 packs total), and you work side by side to build two decks from those cards.
You’ll still each play your own deck, but construction is collaborative—so you can split colors, share synergies, and decide together how to make the strongest combination of decks possible. Communication during deckbuilding is a big part of the fun, and it often leads to more creative builds than standard sealed.
Prerelease is widely considered the most fun and social Magic event—perfect for discovering new decks and meeting players.
